Staff Wand and......

just to be clear: I just love what I am reading of 4th edition... I feel like I am one of the development teamf (a lot of the changes are well developed things I had liked to introduce)

but I was musing on the Orb, since the development staff went from 4 wizard implements to 3.... I thought why don't use the traditional trio: wand, staff and ROD

the Orb while interesting and "right" for some magical tradition, I thint that it "stick out" as the wrong item in the implements :)

I think of the Rod as similar to a sceptre thing, much more think and strong than a Wand, but shorter (a lot) than a Staff

so what do you think?

I think it should be Staff, Wand and Hat!

Every wizard should have to wear a big pointy hat. Otherwise how can you be sure he is a Wizard?

well...yes...but you use 1 wizard implement not all the 3 of them so would I be less wizard for just using my staff?

I thought you used different implements for different types of spells?

In that case what would the Hat or Rod be used for?

On a slightly more serious note I am not sure that Rod would be suffciciently differentiated from Staff.

I'm still looking forward to introducing magical implements based on the four suits of the Tarot: swords, staves, chalices and pentacles. Hopefully the rules will be flexible enough to make that and other modifications relatively easy. :)

they said that implements are important but that you are going to chose one and it will be a meaningful choice, than probably you have to invest feat to be better with your implement, previously they said that certain implements are better at certain spells (orb for terrain/mind control)

as for differentiation they are very different

a wand is 1 foot long 1/4 inch wide thiny thing
a rod is about 3 foot and a little less than 1 inch wide massive thing
a stoff is at least 6 foot and a little more than 1 inch wide supportive thing

furthermore the rod is akin to a sceptre

but my problem is that while I see a magus around with a Rod (ok yes I can simply change it, but it's for the sake of fun) I see the Orb more like a stationary item (like the Palantir or a crystal ball... unless it's a small orb linked to a chain..... but then it would feel more like a pendant or gemstone than an Orb....

just musing

I think the Orb will be just the size of a fist, so you will carry it around easily. And why not, attach it to a rod?

since they told that you could think of "skull" instead of Orb... I was thinking of something bigger...

and indeed you can always put an Orb (or a skull) on a Rod :)

So am I! :D

But really, I guess "the size doesn't matter" here either: an orb could be a big crystal ball, an irregular fist sized amethyst, the ruby on top of the rod, the saphire in your signet ring, and so on... as long as your DM approves ;)
