Standing, does it provoke?

Hm. Was also under the impression that standing up (as a move action) provoked. Seems it doesn't. I know that falling down in 3E was a Very Bad Thing (tm), but removing it completely seems going too far. What I'd like to have seen is:
Using your move action to stand up: provokes
using your attack action to stand up: does not provoke.

Remember that the function of a fighter is to tie up real estate and keep enemies from moving away from/past him. Knocking someone down ties into that fairly well as they would have to give up an attack in order to move away from him on their turn. Unless they're kobolds, in which case they can use their minor to shift.

So what does it mean? On its next turn, the creature that's been knocked down gets to either attack or move, but not both. That's a pretty big deal. Like Ron Burgundy.

Lets pray for a "stab up the prone guy" fighter encounter power and not a "when an adjacent enemy stands for prone" triggered encounter power.

IMO improved trip was the most abusive maneuver in 3e.

I'm really glad that standing up doesn't provoke in 4e. Losing your move actions seems penalty enough in a game where tactical movement is important.

I wonder... In 3.5e, couldn't you stand without provoking with a good tumble check? Perhaps 4e will allow an acrobatics check to stand and move with the same action, like a bounce/ukemi/tech. Or perhaps you could roll from prone, somersaulting around the field. "Look ma, I'm a boulder trap!"

You can still attack from prone, right? Like, ranged attack and the like?

Hm. Though, it does make one wonder why the mages/archers don't get prone in the back ranks if this is the case (assuming of course that they know all the opponents are on the field).

Why wouldn't they? :D Same idea as hiding behind a rock: make yourself as small and hard to hit as possible. My cat makes an attack from prone, pouncing on a mouse. Or when it is lying on its back, claws up in the air.

God, I hate that cat.

Sure, if they want to take that -2 attack penalty and give up the option of moving around, or an opponent breaking through the front lines. It might work well if you're a healbot and don't need to make attack rolls, but otherwise you're doing more harm to yourself than good.
