[sblock]A native of Commenor, Valin spent most of his early years about his father's starship, running cargo to various planets. Because of this, he was flying at a young age, and as soon as he was old enough, joined the Imperial Navy. After spending a decade rising in the ranks and putting up with the realities of life aboard an Imperial starship, he was transfered to a Carrack Cruiser as the starship's executive officer.
For five years, he worked with the captain of the ship to put down small uprising, deal with pirates and smugglers, and other relatively small tasks that still managed to wear on him. Though it soon became apparent that the majority of the personnel aboard the ship felt the same way, none could justify outright mutiny. It was no even spoken about, though the uncomfortable air on the ship was apparent to everyone.
It was a year before the destruction of Alderaan when the entire crew of the ship defected, taking the Carrack to the Rebellion along with them. They were to take part in putting down a supposed Rebel Cell on Commenor. Multiple civilian transports were destroyed and cities were put under martial law under the control of Stormtroopers. During the operation, Valin's wife and children were killed by Stormtroopers simpled for being in the wrong place. When the report came in, that was it. After a short, loud discussion with the captain, they agreed that it was enough, and after announcing the defection to the ship to the sounds of cheers from the crew, they jumped away to find the Rebellion.
After joining the Alliance's small fleet, Valin was given a ship of his own to command, a small Marauder cruiser. Many of the crew that had defected with him followed, and along with a small fleet group, they have spent most of the time taking on small, hit and run actions against the Imperial Navy's supply lines.
Since the loss of Yavin, however, Valin and his ship have worked separate from the rest of the Alliance Fleet. Continuing hit and run tactics, he was also tasked with recon missions into the Core worlds and running blockades to deliver support to smaller Rebel groups on planets, all due to the speed of the ship and the crew's ability to deal with overwhelming odds.
As a commander, he is generally closer to his crew than most captains. He values the knowledge of those around him, and will even get his hands dirty if given the chance. When it comes to dealing with Imperials, he has surprisingly little compassion for them. Despite serving under the Empire for years, Valin has made it clear to all under his command that they all had a chance. Alderaan was their last chance. If that didn't wake anyone else up, then nothing else would and there was no need to even ask for a surrender. That unflinching attitude has given him more than a few conflicts with Admiral Ackbar and the others amongst Alliance High Command, but they have never done more than threaten to give his command to someone else.[/sblock]
