The rumor

From http://www.gateworld.net/news/2006/07/scifitostartremainingepiso.shtml

Short quote from the article:
SCI FI Channel in the U.S. will take a 6-month hiatus starting in September, with the second half of the current season to begin in March, according to a report from last week's San Diego Comic Con event.

SCI FI's Executive Vice President of Original Programing Mark Stern reportedly stated that the network is making the schedule switch so that it can air original programming year-round.

Didn't SciFi have long breaks (not 6 months though) between part one and two of earlier seasons too?

I was at the Stargate Panel at ComicCon and he did not say that during that panel that I can recall. Now I did not stay for the press conference afterwards (I had a press pass but preferred to go check out another panel instead of waiting around), so maybe he said it then.

I actually hope this is the case. I liked Stargate (until it turned into "Fargate"), but those split seasons (where they showed half in the summer, half in the winter) drove me crazy. I could never remember what happened, and I don't really watch as much TV in the Summer.
