Starting Elric?

The Grumpy Celt

I am thinking about starting to read Moorcock's Elric stories. But I don't know where to begin. So, where - or with which book - in the Elric series should I start with?

Not sure where the new book fall but the order is:
Elric of Melnibone
Sailor on the Sea of Fate
The Weird of the White Wolf
The Vanishing Tower
The Bane of the Black Sword
Stormbringer

I have to say, while I liked the original Elric books (listed above), I really haven't been that fond of any written since.

You'll be lucky to find them anywhere nowadays, though (other than used bookstores). Sci-Fi book club has them if you don't mind joining (just hardbacks though).

EDIT-They don't have the individual books. They have Elric I, II, and III, each of which have two or three of the smaller books. They are around $10 each if I remember right, not a bad deal.

The Elric books are actually composed of short stories and the short stories are largely episodic. So it isn't actually crucial that they be read in a particular order. You can also get them of course on Ebay.

They are not completely short stories. The first book was written as a novel to give Elric an origin. According to this site (as far as I can tell) Sailor on the Sea of Fate, and The Vanishing Tower were a novels also... everything else was short story collections. (apparently).

The Elric Saga

1 Elric of Melnibone [vt The Dreaming City ] (1972) with Michael Moorcock - The Dreaming City was an alternate version of Elric of Melnibone re-edited witout the author's permission. The choice of title was also not the author's.

2 The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (1976) with Michael Moorcock

3 The Weird of the White Wolf (1977) [C] with Michael Moorcock

4 The Vanishing Tower [vt The Sleeping Sorceress ] (1970) with Michael Moorcock

5 The Bane of the Black Sword (1977) [C] with Michael Moorcock

6 Stormbringer (1965) with Michael Moorcock

POST STORMBRINGER:

7 The Fortress of the Pearl (1989) with Michael Moorcock
8 The Revenge of the Rose (1991) with Michael Moorcock

The Stealer of Souls (1963) [C] with Michael Moorcock - The stories which appear in The Stealer of Souls and those which appear in The Singing Citadel were combined and re-ordered by the author to form the two new collections: The Weird of the White Wolf (Book 3 of the Elric Saga) and The Bane of the Black Sword (Book 5 of the Elric Saga).

The Singing Citadel (1970) [C] with Michael Moorcock

Elric at the End of Time (1984) [C] with Michael Moorcock - The Daw edition of this book has "The Seventh Book of Elric"printed on the front cover, but only 2 of the short stories, "Elric at the End of Time" and "The Last Enchantment" are actually Elric stories. "The Last Enchantment" does not even fit in the series as it was supposed to be the last Elric story and was written before Stormbringer.
