starting PCs above level 1: loot?

it's in the dmg, (forget what page - has the heading about Higher Level). it's basically one magic item above their level, one magic item at their level, one magic item below their level. and then some gold (i think equal to a magic item below their level) that they can spend on whatever magic items they want.... something like that.

Edit: ninjad!

It's worth noting that these rules work well at higher levels, but can make a 2nd or 3rd level character overequipped compared to an equivalent character played from 1st level.

Agreed. I just started a game at 4th level using the above rules. Definately more magic items floating around the table than the previous group got for levels 1 through 3.

I noticed a little while ago that no one ever gets level 1 magical items in loot.

At level 1, the lowest magical item you are supposed to receive is a level 2.

For this reason, and because I like to give players a little punch, I let everyone start with a single level 1 item of their choice.

That's a good rule, especially in campaigns where magic items are not readily available for sale.

If they are available, PCs can acquire them that way. Even the 11th-level character I made up for our new campaign bought one or two 1st-level items out of his starting gold.
