Starting to Play D&D

EimiArlinee

First Post
Hello, I'm Eimi and I'm new to tabletop gaming. Honestly, I've never really posted online before either, even in real life, I tend to be a bit shy.

I've been interested by D&D for some time now. So I finally made up my mind and read the 3.5 Players Handbook and I think I get the general idea, but if anyone could help me I would really appreciate it.

I get sick a lot, so I can't really go out much, and even if I could I live in a french speaking area and it would be a little awkward. So if someone could teach me how to play with others online?

I'm available pretty much all the time, doing stuff on the computer helps distract me when I'm sick or in pain anyways.

Thank you for reading this, and I appreciate any help you can give me.

In general:
1. Don't play with a group you don't like.
2. Work with your Dm and fellow players to create a fun experience.
3. In general, classes have versatility and the power to back it up are dedicated spellcasters, part time spellcasters, people with lots of skillpoints, and last, warriors with few or no spells or skills.
4. Consider joining a site like Mythweavers, which has character sheets and forums for roleplaying.
5. Go find class guides (on WotC's forums, or on Brilliant Gameologists) and read through them to get an idea of what classes do, and how to make a solid character. Most of them are entertaining and worth the read. I've written two myself. (Well... three.)

First, welcome!

In addition to the good advice you just got, don't be afraid to simply ask questions here: there are lots of knowledgeable, helpful gamers who post regularly on ENWorld...including many game designers!

ENWorld also has a Gamers Seeking Gamers service, and may be able to help you find English-speaking gamers in your area.

You say this is your first foray into tabletop RPGs- have you played computer RPGs before?

The reason I asked is because some of your fellow CRPG gamers may also be tabletop gamers, and may be able to answer some of your questions or even direct you to find adventures (or even other TTRPGs) similar to the computer games you enjoy.

So if someone could teach me how to play with others online?
First, you'll probably want to download MapTool, as that will help you to play online with others.

Next, you should go to the forums where games are advertised. You'll want to find games that are play-by-post, play-by-email, forum-based, or MapTool-based. Here are a few:

En World's forum
En World's gamer-matching system
RPG.net gamers-seeking-gamers
RPG.net play by post advertisements
Giant's game recruitment forum

Have fun!
