Starting Wealth above 1st level

why so complicated?

I realize fancy charts are very popular and have their appeal and all but to me it seems overly obtuse. As a DM, I simply keep a running total of wealth for a party member. This is easily accomplished via an NPC because you are probably already having to track it anyway. Then when we get a newer character later on, I give them 75% of what the incumbent character would have. So if a character who had been in the party from 1st level to 10th level would have received a total of 20,000gp (just a made up number), then the new character would get 15,000gp to work with.

This system has the advantage that it automatically takes into account the group having more or less funds than the standards book amount. So if the DM keeps the characters poor, this system still gives the new character an appropriate amount of funds for that particular campaign.

The downside is if you starting the entire group at higher level but that isn't too big of a deal since any figure or method the DM comes up with is easily applied to everyone and will by it's nature be fair and equal.
