Stats for Phoenix

Yeah, just took a look in the MM II and couldn't believe the CR!

Anyone wanna stat me out a baby phoenix with CR 1 or something like a phoenix with CR 1?

A wizard player of mine wants to get one as a familiar.
 

Does it have to be an actual phoenix? Can you just give him something with bird stats and describe it as looking like a phoenix? 'Cause it'll be near impossible to lower the phoenix's CR that far without it losing pretty much all abilities.
 

Phoera are CR 3, from Monster Manual 3. I think that's about as familiar-suitable a phoenix as you're going to find. If it's still too powerful just use a lightning hawk or quasit or something and change the energy type/alignment/details around to call it a phoenix.
 

without doing an actual phoenix, you'd probably have to do something like ...

1) require the improved familiar feat first off (it allows for stuff like celestial hawks and all)

2) use a hawk or eagle as the base creature and give it the fire creature template (or whatever that is from the manual of the planes) - and if you don't have that book (which i don't, i've just heard it mentioned) take the celestial template from the MM and just guess what the fire one would be like.

3) Replace some of the later-level familiar abilities with lesser-version abilities of a phoenix

that would be my take on it anyway...
