Yeah, try running a serious hard(ish) SF game when to them science fiction is Star Wars.

Have them calculate proper deceleration or otherwise have to do the spacial physics of coming upside something in space. They'll understand what hard science fiction is. I think Space Opera RPG does something like that.

Orbital dynamics seems to be where a lot of people fall down. I recall one convention Traveller game in which the GM had our ship approaching a derelict that had been in orbit without any power for centuries, and told us that we'd only have a limited time to explore it, because our ship was nearly out of fuel and wouldn't be able to maintain orbit for long. That's the same ship that was about to dock with this derelict, and thus share its orbit.

In another, we were in an asteroid belt orbiting a gas giant, and had to investigate an explosion that had occurred on an asteroid several hours ago. Half the party wanted to backtrack from the asteroid's current position to where it was when the explosion occurred, because they thought that anything or anyone which had been knocked off the asteroid by the explosion would be left behind there.
