Staves ---?`

First Post
ok, so I read this thread the other day that got me to thinking.

Quarterstaves are double weapons.

Now we take our nice little staff of power, and start bippity bopping with the dual head -- smites.
then my dm says "Hey, thats a dual headed weapon! Only one head is enchanted so you cant smite with both..."
which leads me to ask "Why didnt you tell me? I spend the next month enchanting the other head to be a +5 Thundering Spell Storing Defender (Total +9). I spend 81k gold and (X) xp..."
...
Of course my DM then compared notes and decided a staff of power was errr just one item, and it was all enchanted with err all the same stuff. hehehe.

Actually, that would be 162,000gp (it's a weapon). hehehe ;)

IMC there's a difference between a Staff and a Quarterstaff. A Staff is a 6' hunk of wood (or other material, look at Saruman's Staff for an example of an iron staff) that isn't balanced for double-ended fighting. It doesn't have to be masterwork to be enchanted, and can't take weapon enchantments. Most wizards, since they don't have Ambi/TWF don't bother making their magic staves from quarterstaffs, they use more style than that.

The occasional Ambi/TWF wizard will enchant his staff as both a weapon and as a staff, giving him the extra flexibility. Those are very rare, however.

I guess all these staffs ( staves? ) in the
DMG that can be used as +2 quarterstaffs or
whatever don't really exist...

Only one end?

That seems like an odd ruling. Of course, you immediately found the fatal flaw. :)

Yes. And since he's enchanting it himself, he only pays half the market price, which is 81k ;)

Doesn't matter. By the rules, it counts against your character wealth in full, even though you only pay half to make it. ;)
