Pathfinder 1E Stay the hand question?

I've got a question about the Paladin's "Stay the hand" ability.

It's this part I wanted clarification on:

"You can cast this spell when the target is about to make a melee attack against another creature"

If I'm reading that correctly, as an immediate reaction, the player would have to use this when the
DM states character X is being attacked, but before the DM rolls the dice to see if its a hit.

Our paladin in our game has been using it whenever the DM rolls a crit against a party member, then
activating it.

Thanks gang.

It has to be activated before the dice are rolled.

"You can cast this spell when the target is about to make a melee attack against another creature"

It's right in the wording of the rule. Your Paladin likes his rules homebrewy, huh? ;)

Nah, he's a really nice guy. We talked it over, aside from game play and after
we re-reading the spell description we all agreed and got it sorted out.

Thanks for the reply! :)
