Steampunk Middle Earth, but use a WWI-era Europe with some kingdom changes:

I have no problem with steampunk Middle Earth.

But, WWI feels a little late for steampunk, given the proliferation of internal combustion engines of the time. Dieselpunk typically starts in the era between WWI and II.

But then, if you lean into how the steam is waning, on the way out, as much of the magic of traditional Middle Earth is waning, that might work. The steam troll is rusty, and a bit broken down, but still dangerous.

I like that. I'd originally assumed an alternate timeline where the advanced steam/clockwork/magitech development meant that ICE technology never arose. But maybe the elves will fly their failing steam dirigibles into the west ...
