First Post
Stone Anvil Creations, (www.stoneanvil.com), a new d20 company, is proud to re-release its initial offering of Spell Effect Patterns (SEPs), in a package that contains all 0-lvl spells in the Dungeons & DragonsÔ game. This product, entitled Cantrips and OrisonsÔ, is comprised of 5 class sets of Spell Effect Patterns, printouts usable in miniature play that represent spell effects. Included are 12 Cleric and 13 Druid Orisons, and 12 Bard and 16 Wizard / Sorcerer Cantrips, for a total of 53 Spell Effect Patterns.

Features:

**Full-color, artistically-designed, and made for use with miniatures - cool!
**Includes SPELL CARDS for every spell, making sorting and building spell decks easy
**Color-coded – each is outlined in a color of its school of magic – a handy mnemonic device
**Made to Scale -1 inch = 5 feet, the scale for almost all D&D miniature campaigns
**Info-packed - Consult important spell information on the SEP while you use it!
**Customizable – players can cut out the patterns to best utilize them during play
**Durable - can be printed on cardstock and/or laminated for greater durability
**Markable - If laminated, can be written on using dry- or wet-erase markers.
**Spellbook Alternative – The patterns and cards can be used as an alternative to a spellbook, and in most instances, referencing the Player’s Handbook.
**SEPs include patterns for different caster levels – for example, a Ray of Frost cast by a 1st level caster is 5 inches (25 feet range), whereas the same spell cast by a 2nd-3rd caster is 6 inches (range of 30 feet).
**Each pattern has the full System Reference Document spell stat block and spell description included for your reference.

Benefits:

**Smoothes the flow of combat by presenting a visual representation, aiding the DM and players to better comprehend and remember a spell’s effects.
**Creates exciting visual spellcasting.
**Allows quicker calculation of where a spell effect happens, and who or what is affected
**Speeds play by minimizing lookups in reference books.
**Enhances the use of miniatures.

You can find it now on www.rpgnow.com.
It sells for $5.00 for all 53 patterns and spell cards.

How different is this from the layout and design of the old SEPs you were selling on RPGnow a few months ago?

I have both the Cantrip releases, and was curious about the changes.

Free upgrade!

This set includes all 0-lvl spells. Previously released were Bard, Sorcerer and Wizard only. These are improved, and Cleric and Druid Spells are added.

If you've previously purchased any SEP product, you are eligible for a FREE upgrade, according to the lifelong buyer policy.

Please register your product at: contact@stoneanvil.com and put Register in the subject line. You'll be given a FTP site, username and password.

Thanks.

Any possibility of just having the possible shapes of spells? I don't need one for EVERY spell out there, I just need the dozen or so shapes that spells share...

I was disappointed with the preview on the website, they have the same problem with Burning Hands that I did the first time a character used it.

If you centre the semi-circle in the middle of the edge as play is usually on a square grid there becomes arguements about which squares are effected by the spell.

The offical ruling is you centre the semi-circle on one corner of the casters square. So the area of effect mapped to a squared grid is like so...

Code:
OXXOO
XXXXO
OOCOO

or

Code:
OOXXO
OXXXX
OOCOO

You use the template they have provided and it will cause no end of arguement over which squares are effect or not.

Burning hands

"The offical ruling is you centre the semi-circle on one corner of the casters square. So the area of effect mapped to a squared grid is like so..."

Would you give us this official source, please?

From the most official source that I'm aware of, the DMG, on page 69;

"Realize ahead of time that you will have to make ad hoc rulings when applying areas onto the grid. Use the following as guidelines:

<skip down>

Miscellaneous: Using the rules given above, apply areas to the grid as well as you can. Remember to maintain a consistent number of affected squares in areas that differ on the diagonal."

So, there are some guidelines/rules about burning hands, but the DMG says that diagonal casting will have effects that are up to DM interpretation. In this case, 6 squares are affected, but if you cast it on the diagonal, it is hard to choose the 6th square (the first 5 are relatively easy) affected. With the SEP, you can have 360 degree directional targeting and pick the 6 squares affected.

So the DM has to use his own judgment in the end, regardless of player arguments. I recommend the above adjudication, and will consider this in redesigning burning hands (including a statement like "Pick 6 squares of the grid that are affected that are at least mostly covered by the pattern.") It's not pretty, nor exact, but neither is movement in the 3E game. At least it is practical.

I'll guess my previous question is a no(the whole money making thing, and I don't blame you). However, how are you going to tackle some of the REALLY big area's like some of the cones and what not(like Sleet Storm, 40 foot radius!). These will have to fit on multiple pages and pieced together, are you just going to add them to multiple PDF pages?

Just wondering.

These look interesting...but I was unable to download the two "Preview" PDF files as they were requesting Username/Password details.

Oh well...

That's a good idea, and one we've considered. We'll add that to our product possibilities.

It should be fairly easy (relatively speaking.) Maybe we could offer it as a freebie.

Try again. I made a mistake with my password protection code and placement.

It should be working now.

Thanks.
