Storing D&D Minis when not in use

The only minis I have on display are a few of my dragons...but I have far too many to display.

Right now, my assembled metal minis reside in 36 Chessex boxes and 2 black plastic briefcases with foam inserts (from Container Store).

The ones that have yet to be assembled are in 5 plastic Sterilite 58 quart stacking tubs.

The plastic minis (DDM, WizKids, Star Wars, generics), OTOH, have a nice 5' tower of 8.5"x11" Sterlite stacking drawer boxes all to themselves. The Dwarven Forge has a similar tower, made of 2'x2' Sterlite drawer boxes, 2.5' high.

The overriding theme is portability. Even though I'm usually the host, the game travels enough that I need to be able to assemble "a fighting fohrce of unpararrerrred maginitoorde*" very quickly. To that end, I bought a cheap piece of rolling luggage that can hold about 6 Chessex boxes, all the books we need, a shoebox for Huge Minis, and a big bag of dice.

*bonus points for IDing the quote.

I use compartment boxes. You get them in the building centre, they're usually used to store different types of nuts, bolts, nails, screws, light bulbs, fuses, whatever.

I do plan to use some sort of display case/glass cabinet for them once the gaming room is done.

And I'm talking about over 2000 figures here.

My primary goals are portability, inexpensiveness, and protection, so I'm currently using the same storage method as Glyfair: baseball card boxes. I've got a big 5000-card box that has all my medium and smaller minis sorted by faction, a 4000-card box for my larges, and another 4000 without separators for my huges. I recently hit the point where I'm considering redefining my categories, but the boxes are still great.

Edit: I've also got a shoebox that I use for just my CE large figures. Lotsa bad guys! :)

not to be insultingly obvious here, but have you considered shelves?

The presence of a non gaming significant other, or one or more small children in a place of residence can move this option way down the list of desirable or practical solutions however. :)
