[Story Hour] What Right To Adventurers Have To Take The Law Into Their Own Hands?

Yes, I'm afraid it's another philosophical update from me :) THis time the party have just cleared out the cult beneath a city, and are now having to deal with their patron. Just what right did they have to go down ther and put some slavers to the sword when they should have told the authorities, anyway?

In the next update things get even better, when Ebri *really* annoys Ecurius...

I haven't read your story hour, but what are the laws & customs of the land? Is it every citizen's duty to root out evil and destroy it (as it is in one of my kingdoms), or is evil tolerated so long as it cannot be linked to any concrete harm (as is the case in a different area)?

Do "The Authorities" have access to Commune (or similar spells) -- and would they use a spell to determine if the PCs acted morally before trying them?

I don't see this as a moral question, I see it as a legal question.

In the case in question, the PC's did what they did in a capital city. It irks those in authority that a bunch of merc's went in and slaughtered a slaver operation beneath the city. While the slavers definitely were breaking the law, it was not within the PC's rights to go and kill them; they should have reported what they knew to the authorities...

...at least, that's the legal side of things. But as my post shows, and the next update will expand upon even further, it's not quite as simple as a legal question to the PC's, but rather has very definite moral implications...
