Stronghold builders guidebook

I got it today.

Not indespesible. But I really liked it.

The guidelines work a very nice balance between bean-counter details and completely flexible design limits.

I am impressed so far.

You can design anything from "realistic" castles, to mithral walled magic infused citadels to ice castles to underwater towers and flying keeps.

They do not get hung up on trying to be to accurate with what it SHOULD cost, but just in a reasonable, consistent, balanced and flexible ballpark.

If you are comfortable just drawing a floorplan and saying, 500,000 gp, then you won't need this.

But for the money I have found it to be a fun read with some good ideas.

I personally enjoyed the segments they used in Dragon 295. DEFINATELY worth looking at since I enjoy designing my own fortresses and such.

I bought this today and it is pretty cool--hardly essential, but a nice luxury to have for players and DMs alike. There are a lot of good ideas for designing magical locations and rooms, too. Thumbs up! :)

BTW: Dragon 295 had some great extras for this book, so don't pass it up!

It's out, regardless of release dates...

... or so it seems, hehe.

Yeah, I'm interested in the book, but at CAN$31.95, I'd like to hear some stuff about it. Needless to say, it's sitting on the shelves of both my "local" gaming stores, and I'm thinking about picking it up.

I saw both Faiths+Pantheons and Stronghold builder's guide at my local gaming/comic store. I've actually found more stuff in Ames IA than in St. Louis.

Somehow, the building prices WotC has been using seem wrong. They all seem way too expensive from a mechanics oint of view. How much utility do you think an adventurer gains from a castle worth 500k versus +10 armor, a +7 sword, Rod of Security, Helm of Teleportation, ring of sustenance, a cloak of resistence +5?

By the time you can afford a big castle, your enemies won't be impressed either.

It just seems the prices were inflated to make things more expensive for the PCS. I can see spend some gold on a castle that serves as plot hook at best and point of vulnerability at worst for the coolness of it, but I can't a character facing 20th level threats with 1/2 of his resources sunk into an expensive stone bull's eye.

You're not thinking like a king! Get some land, build your stronghold and then make the peasants work to bring you money! Sure, you're arch-mage enemies wont be impressed by a 70K simple stone tower, but think how those grovelling serfs will respect you. "Oh taxman, I was thinking of lining my living quarters with mithril. Will you go and see if you can squeeze some more out of the little people? Call it...oh....I dont know...Solstice Tax!" :-)
