Subtitles or dubbing?

How do you prefer your foreign language films? I have a strong preference for subtitles, unless the principal stars are doing their own dubbing. But I know some people find subtitles distracting. Strong opinions or strong apathy?

Strongly prefer subtitiles. Dubbing is fine if it is good, well timed and properly acted, but I have seen too many times the company doing the dubbing trying to save money on dubbing with low grade VA's.

Animation - Depends upon how good the dubbing is. Fer instance, I don't watch Cowboy Bebop subbed because 1) the dub rocks and 2) the few times I watched the sub I just couldn't get into it. Same with Hellsing and, to a lesser extent, Trigun (though I watch both since I like them both).

Live Action - Subbed almost always. I can't get over the lack of lip-synching that seems to plague most live action dubs. Just a preference.

I prefer them with neither subtitles nor dubbing (as long as I understand the language, of course, but since in most cases it's english, that works fine). :)

Other than that, I prefer a well-dubbed movie. Subtitles are ok, but when you actually have to read them all to understand anything, they are too distracting, especially when things are moving a bit faster, and then you cannot fully enjoy the visuals.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised, if we get far higher quality dubbing here, considering that 90+% of the movies coming to the cinema are being dubbed.

oh, for the love of tymora... subbed!

dubbing is pretty much always horrible. i can't think of a movie that had good dubbing.

subbed, no contest. :)

Subtitles every time. Within a few minutes I completely forget that I'm reading subtitles and my brain thinks that it is 'hearing it' in the dialog the people are using.

I do that too - like I've never seen La Femme Nikita dubbed, only subtitled, but when I remember scenes from it, I remember them as if I heard them in English.
