I've just gained my last level as a thaumaturgist, and was wondering what to call for my planar cohort (because it comes from a planar ally spell, it has to be an elemental or outsider with 12 HD or less).
My Leadership score is 15, which means I'm restricted to a 10th-level character.
My problem is that there's not a lot of 'roles' left to fill out in our party:
- healer/utility caster [cleric with Fire & Knowledge domains/thaumaturgist] (me)
- melee combatant [fighter/barbarian]
- ranged combatant [rogue/order of the bow initiate]
- combat caster [sorcerer]
- utility caster [transmuter]
- stealth [the rogue/archer above + the sorcerer's enhanced crow familiar]
In keeping with my character's theme and deity, the cohort should be fire-related.
Some of the options I've looked at:
- Azer with only 4
class levels in a divine-related class (cleric, favored soul, etc.)
- fire or smoke mephit with 4 class levels
- fire-infused giant eagle (with 2 extra HD)
I'm finding out that the LA is taking a big chunk out of the utility of this class feature, and it limits me to very low level character classes. But more monstrous options aren't much better because they have restricted mobility or limited usefulness (for example, the giant eagle's utility as a conveyance pales in comparison to the teleports and dimension doors the other casters can use).
So, I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for a cool cohort given these parameters. Acceptable sources include WOTC (except FR or Eberron), Malhavoc (except UA), Bastion Press and Green Ronin.
