Suggestions from Enworld Character Builders!

First Post
Hey all,

I'm looking to start a new Lvl 1 character. We will be using a 25 point Buy system. the actual party is a more Rogue'ish style. Sneaking around, talking the talk, liking the shadows :) I was wondering what peoples suggestions are for a rogue'ish build? We are allowed all the Core Books aswell as pretty much every other real book out there (PHBII, Complete Books, etc...). The setting is in faerun :)

So, what do you guys suggest as a character but that will grow well too. Cause the last batch we played till about 16th level and still going strong, so i'm looking for a longterm type of thing..

Any help would be apprecaited :)

Thanks,

Al

Depends on concept:

Sneak for melee - Rogue

Sneak spellcaster - Beguiler

Sneak blaster - Warlock with appropriate invocations

Sneak to mess with other players' preconceptions - Rogue/Paladin :D

Don't overlook Psionics (or possibly Incarnum)...lots of sneaky stuff in there.

From the XPH, Soulknives can make dandy assassins, Psychic Warriors make nice enforcers, and Psions make EXCELLENT Rogue/Mages. The Lurk from CompPsi can fill all of those roles as well.

True Strike + Longbow makes an elvish diviner (or sorcerer) into a nasty sniper...

An Evoker with Sleep can make a great living "mugging" people or raiding small homes or businesses.

Illusionists can be good at evading pursuit.

Cool! Do you guys know what books these are from? Also are they considered average, subpowered, overpowered? As for Psionics, I'm really curious...are they comparable to the other regular classes or more like a support class instead (like the Bard for example...i know not that bad either, but certainly not overpowered...oh gosh, i can see the thread taking a different turn and turning into another bard debate...lets try to not make that happen ok? lol)

Thanks,

Al

Consider the Shadow Heritage feat from Planar Handbook if you're going to be sneaky. It gives you bonuses to Hide & Move Silently when in shadowy areas.

Some options that are standard fare, yet can be quite sneaky:

Ranger (or from the UA - Urban Ranger variant)
Wizards with the right skills & spell choices.
Druids (or UA - Urban Druid)

Seems like the Shadow Caster stuff from Tome of Magic might fit well, but I have not really checked out this book.

Any particular Races also recommended?

I will look into the types so far posted (although I don't know what an Urban Druid is found either...yet :) )

Also will look into Shadow Heritage :)

Keep the help coming..and has anyone actually played these types here ... if so, what has been your experience?

thanks,

Al

Kobold Ninja...

Especially if you use the Races of the Dragon web enhancement that nudges the Kobold up a bit. No other character will Hide like a Kobold Ninja.

Jack (who's alll about the Kobold Ninja today)

Unearthed Arcana is the book with a variety of tweaks for the game. All are optional, but many options become standard fare in many campaigns - like the class variants.

You can find the Urban Ranger, and Urban Druid there, and maybe a few more ideas. If your campaign is solely focused on Urban adventures then they are worth a try, especially to fill niches that may be left untaken in a Roguish/Stealth based campaign. If the setting is more evenly distributed Urban/Wilderness/Dungeon then standard classes may fit better. The new PHB2 has options for Scout class for a Dungeon Scout variant... so add that to your list.

For an great race - look to the Whisper Gnome in Races of Stone. It is specifically built for stealth.

Point of view of the types of campaigns, its more evenly distributed...so now that I have looked into the urban druid (althought cool) it is not for me.

Personally, I love the idea of a Whisper Gnome :) The reason the Kolbold isn't right, is because we use books (including dragon magazines) but generally not web-only publications :)

That said, I also really like the Beguiler. Seems kinda cool...anyone played one? What woudl be a good Race for these?

Been reading up on what people think the ups and downs of a psionic so far and people seem to "not" think that they are so great. However, I didn't see much relating to stealthy psionics...any examples (i'm really interested in psionics personnaly, they are really different than anything i have played so far..but i know nothing about them)

Thanks again for all your help so far!
