ENWorlders:
Sadly, I am putting Jon Harrow on a bit of a hiatus as I am working towards fleshing out some of my ideas. Right now I am trying to work on Chanters and wish to get some insight on how you would take them forward in a less linear game than D&D.
Chanters, or sorcerers, are individuals who bind spirits to their bidding. While some use these spirits to actually do their dirty work (The Master and some later characters in the series come to mind as I begin to work), some bind these spirits for the good of the populace or to gain their powers. While some practice spiritual religions, most Chanters see the spirits as a sort of fuel source. Chanters also have some abilities to manipulate the spirits of those who have passed on, and elemental forces.
I'm really not getting a Summoner vibe from the Chanters as I write about them, as they seem to bind spirits using their Cages and other means to wend out their powers. They use materials to create these bindings, and there are those who even practice some necromancy in replacing the spirits of those who have fallen with a sort of 'null space', allowing a body to travel on without its spirit in the form of an undead creature of highly varying skills and powers. I want to be able to represent this character type in a way that while the Wise seek out knowledge, the Chanter is sort of a thief or even a slaver in his ways. Some may be considered Evil for their practices, but others are invaluable tools able to allow the spirits of heroes to items or even structures to let them live on giving their knowledge and prowess to generations to come.
How would you interpret this sort of spellcaster? I would love to have someone who may have more knowledge of current D&D norms in 3.x or even 4e to present possibilities so I may finally put this baby to rest.
