Summon Horde

Epic Summon Horde is going to stink. I can't make it a random number. I have to specify the exact type of creature and each additional creature greatly increases the DC. Okay, I want to summon a horde of Lanterns Archons. I want it to be better then Summon Horde 5, which could summon 4d6 of them. So, we'll make it a nice even 30. Base Spellcraft DC of 14. Not affected by the creatures CR since it's 2 or less. Then it's x2 for each additional one, so 29 times or a total of 420. So, the only way to make it worth while it to make it cost lots of XP, require more people in the casting, make the casting time rediculus. It just doesn't seem worth while, and to summon something worth while it would require a crap load of mages spending slots and XP.

Hmmm, well, I see no reason why the spell couldnt just continue on up as 10th - 13th level spells... a wizard would just need Improved Spell Capacity to be able to cast them...

It would be setting something of a new prececedent for your game... but hey, we *are* in the House Rules forum after all... and that is preferable to some sort of gimped out epic version I think ;)

Well, it's not exactly what you have in mind, but there is Outsider Army from my campaign (reproduced here for those who don't have my spell doc):

OUTSIDER ARMY
Conjuration
(Summoning)
Level: Clr 9
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 round
Range: Long (400’+40’/level)
Effect: See text
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
This spell summons forth a great horde of creatures aligned with your deity. The exact creatures summoned depend on your alignment:
LG- 1d10+10 lantern archons led by 1d3+3 hound archons.
NG- 1d10+12 celestial wolves led by an avoral guardinal.
CG- 1d10+12 celestial eagles led by a pair of celestial unicorns.
LN- 1d10+10 duodrone modrons, 1d4+2 quadrones and 1 pentadrone.
N- 1d10+10 small elementals (choose type) led by 1 huge elemental.
CN- 1d10+8 white slaadi (leader? What’s a leader?) [this refers not to the white slaad in the ELH but one I've had imc for some time; I may have to change its name to a song slaad or something... pale slaad? I dunno...]
LE- 1d10+10 imps led by two kytons
NE- 1d10+5 canoloths led by a mezzoloth
CE- 1d10+20 quasits (no leadership)

Empower that and you have a good time...

BADguy: is casting a spell

PC: spell craft? rolls, and succeeds

DM: okay, you can't ID the exact spell but it's a summoning spell

PC: ohh a summon monster, whoopee

DM: suddleny 14 fiendish wolves appear and attack!

PC's: 14!!??

... and then I'd let them research it or find his spell book if they do kill him.

[edit: croth, you have the honor of having the first 9th lvl spell in my book of spells from online sources! I like 'em simple and effective.]

Excellent, glad I could help. This are the first spells for third edition I have ever come up with. I need to add in Summon Nature's Horde, a version of Summon Nature's Ally.

Yup. Of course, all you really need to do to achieve that is change the title of the spells and the spell listings :p
