Summon Monster Questions

1. Is there a limit how far a summoned monster can be from the catser?

2. Are there any feats (or magic items or something) that can increase the power of the summon monster spells?

1. The range of the spell, certainly for it to appear initially, anyway. After that I think it can go anywhere.

2. Augment Summoning gives all your summoned creatures +4 STR and +4 CON, but I think it has spell focus(summoning) as a prerequisite, which seems pretty useless...

cheers,

1 the range applies only to the moment of the summoning, afterwards the summoned creature can roam free, as described under the spells effect

2 augment summoning PHB 3.5, you need spellfocus (conjuration), there is no thing called spellfocus (summoning), any spell you can cast on another creature you can cast on a summoned one, like haste or cat's grace or something like this.

IIRC, summoned creatures cannot teleport, so in practice how far they can move is limited by their movement rate and the spells duration.

Aside from that, no limits.

The only other core thing that comes to my mind are the alignment domains, which increase the caster level of every spell with the appropriate type (good, evil, law, chaos). For example, a LG cleric of a LG deity could choose Law and Good and cast Summon Monster X (lawful good creatures) at +2 caster level. The benefit is not so much for the price, but at low levels it will make the spell last 2 extra rounds.

No, aside from being a Pre-requisite for Augment Summoning. Non-Human Druids effectively get no feat until 3rd if they go this route.

Right. I suspected so. As a player of a Half-Orc Cleric with one skill point(!) per level, I couldn't find a PrC that I could easily get in to. Looked at Summoner, which was ok, then realised that I needed to burn a feat slot on Spell Focus(conjuration).

Meanwhile, back on the thread, if you use the Summon Undead spells from Magic of Faerun, you can get a nice boost on them by using Stone Bones, or Iron Bones etc...

Summoned creatures can teleport just fine. It's their summoning abilities that they can't use (ie, no exponentially increasing demon horde).

Hong, this time you are wrong (well at lest in the 3.5e) from the srd:

A summoned monster cannot summon or otherwise conjure another creature, nor can it use any teleportation or planar travel abilities. Creatures cannot be summoned into an environment that cannot support them.

:-D
