Summoning Etherreal monsters?

Plane Sailing

Astral Admin - Mwahahaha!
I was just thinking about the Blink spell; it's characteristics allow you to attempt to cast your spells onto the ethereal plane (20% chance of your spells ending up there when you target a material plane creature while blinking, logically you could attempt to target something ethereal and have a 20% chance of the spells ending up on the material plane)

It struck me that the ability to summon monsters onto the ethereal plane might be quite cool (if menaced by phase spiders, for instance)

Cheers

Hi Plane Sailing,
That's a pretty cool idea!
With Greater Blink (Complete Arcane), you could reliably cast onto the ethereal. Would it work though?

SRD:...and spells you cast while ethereal affect only other ethereal things.

I'd say yes, you could do it, but...

Planar Ally duration is instantaneous, so the creature would stay behind, no problem, but it may be hard to bargain out your deal in the first round. That would either add time before the ally acts or makes instruction impossible.

Summon Monster's duration is 1rd/caster lvl, so it may not hold after you leave the plane. I'd rule that it does hold, even though you are in and out.

That's not a problem, since the duration of most spells (unless dependent on Concentration or some other specific clause) is independent of the caster's presence.
