Sunsigns

Hi, I am thinking of including sunsigns in my campaign. Each PC would get some small bonus based on their sunsign. An example would be a +1 to 2 different skills or a +1 to an ability. has anyone done this before? How has it worked? Is it too powerful? I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas on the subject.

Thanks

I used the idea in a non-D20 game whereby each character got to choose a sign (based on birth year Chinese horoscope style). In D20 I'd run them as background feats so for instance a PC with the Sunsign 'Monkey' might get the Acrobatic Feat for free

In my head I have tossed around ideas for a final fantasy d20 rpg... and one idea was to use the sun signs to determine how resistant/vulnerable a character was to elemental magic. If I went the Fire/Ice/Lightning/Water setup of FFX, I could correspond each element with each group of signs...

Aries - Fire +3 Ice -3
Leo - Fire +2 Ice -2
Sagittarius - Fire +1 Ice -1
Gemini - Lightning +3 Water -3
Libra - Lightning +2 Water -2
Aquarius - Lightning +1 Water -1
Cancer - Water +3 Lightning -3
Scorpio - Water +2 Lightning -2
Pisces - Water +1 Lightning -1
Taurus - Ice +3 Fire -3
Virgo - Ice +2 Fire -2
Capricorn Ice +1 Fire -1

Hmm, interesting. I hadn't considered bonuses and minuses for elements based on sunsigns. It is definitely worth thinking about. Keep up the good ideas.

Sword & Sorcery's Relics & Rituals 2 had a system for star mages and horoscope influences. IDHTBIFOM but IIRC it was a set of background feats along with some interested "color" to make it sort of half-fluff/half-crunch.

In Hârnmaster, characters get a bonus of up to +3 to the "base" of a number of skills based on their sunsign - for example, someone with the "ship" sunsign would get bonuses to various skills used aboard a ship. The base would then be used along with a profession-based multiplier in order to get your final skill level, in a percentile system - so you might get that bonus up to 7 times or so for certain skills.

Thanks for all the ideas. I played Harnmaster for a few years but we used pregenerated characters the GM gave us. As for Relics and Rituals 2, we might carry that book at work (I work for a large bookstore chain). I will have to check. You've all given me some good ideas and some things I can expand upon. I appreciate your assistance.

Thanks,
