Does anone know how Lex Luthor is president. I just bought superman/batman and enjoyed it but I am not a comic expert. When I was a kid Lex Luthor was the mad scientist. Did they change him completely?

In the mid Eighties DC rebooted it's universe after a big event called "Crisis on Infinate Earths". After it was finished all the big comics started over again with issue #1 & they more or less ignored most of what had come before and started telling stories with the assumption that everyone was just starting out.

After Crisis, Superman was still superpowerful but could no longer move planets, and Lex Luthor was an evil and corrupt buisnessmen rather than a scientist. When he needed evil gear, he had his people make it.
After many years of antagonizing the big blue, he ran for office. With all his wealth, power, and contacts, he won.

Yeah, they made him into a politician/businessman quite a while back, in 1986 when they pretty much completely rebooted the DC universe. His backstory now is still that he's a supergenius and inventor, but he turned the success and profits of his inventions into a huge megacorporation, LexCorp, and became a political figure who was elected President of the United States in 2000.

However, in 2004 they had him try to fight Superman by using a ultra-tech battlesuit and super-steroids, and in a madness brought on by the drugs, he revealed his true evil nature to the nation, was impeached, and the acting CEO of LexCorp had arranged for the company to be bought out by Wayne Enterprises, leaving Lex publically disgraced and broke, so he went into hiding as a reclusive and insane inventor, going back to the "mad scientist" concept for him.
