Superman I & II: not all that

Not as far as I've read. Midway City has always been in the midwest. For a long time, it was assumed to be Chicago. The DC Universe has since clarified that it is, in fact in Michigan. In what is commonly referred to as 'the Yupper'. (Local slang for the Upper Peninsula...that's the part that doesn't look like a mitten ;)).

Specifically: "Midway City, according to the Atlas of the DC Universe, is located slightly east of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan."

Just like Metropolis, this is placing a large city in a relatively sparesly populated part of the United States where no real city exists. The largest urban center there would be Sault St. Marie, which has some 16,000 residents. A city, yes, but a very small city, compared with Detroit, which has nearly a million residents. Certainly not a city big enough to support a museum with thousand of ancient Egyptian artifacts. :D
Hmm...

(I must be confusing Midway City with the Midway Orphanage where Clark and Bruce went before Christmas in the World's Finest miniseries).

Well, while Superman I and II arent the best supers movies made, I still kinda like II. I is very slow, but it suffers from being an origin story. The whole series is very Silvery Agey, which can turn off todays audience.

3 and 4? Ewwww.

But how can you not like Terence Stamp?

Bow before Zod......

I wonder, in another 20 years, will The Matrix, LotR and Star Wars Ep: I - III all have "cheesy" looking effects compared to what we will see in that time period?

I happen to think Superman II is one of the best supers movies ever made.

Sure its cheesy, but it has Terrence Stamp shouting KNEEL BEFORE ZOD.

If a movie needs anything besides that to be great, I have no idea what it would be :)

And, seriously... there just is no arguement that could possibly stand against this bastion of truth. And no defense needed to support it. Vig has boiled the essence of Superman II down to it's purest core. :D

Let's not forget in our arguements against Metropolis being Chicago (regardless of whether DC says it's not) that Chicago is a port city, and is on a large body of water. :)

Different Mindset for a different time...

I was overwhelmed, in seeing them both...back in my younger days. Getting older, we get more cynical? :D

Ok, in preparation for Superman Returns, and as a supplement to my enjoyment of Smallville on TV, I recently watched the first two Superman films. I had vague recollections of enjoying them greatly as a kid.

Whoa. Disappointment.

The pace was glacial. The effects were cheesy. The villains were goofy. Margot Kidder ... wha?? Only Reeve's charasmatic performance lifted the films anywhere above "bleh" level.

Anyone care to comment?

Bad is not the word for them...try BLACK HOLE effect. :(

Intellectually, I recognise the many flaws in the the first two Superman movies. I can see that they haven't aged well, stylistically or in terms of special effects. There are things mentioned in this thread which bug me, too.

But I still love them. They're great, feelgood films. I enjoy them every time I watch them (which is about once every few years, admittedly). I don't view them as a definitive Superman in any way - just a fun take on him.

Superman 3 and 4, though... now they were truly bad movies.

Here's hoping Superman Returns is good. I already have doubts about certain elements of the movie, but I still have high hopes.
