Judging by the titles of the comic books that will bridge Superman II and Superman Returns, he returns from Krypton.

From what I remember, the star went nova and engulfed the planet. If I remember right in one explanation it had something to do with their messing with the sun (or something Zod had done) that ended up causing their own demise. There's been too many retelling's of his origin for me to remember. I'm gonna have to dive into my old comic book long boxes and find the Byrne version and see what he said happened. Not that his is the final say so on it, but it was one of the better revisions of Superman.

It was Krypton itself that blew up. Not in any signifiant storytelling way. No.

Indeed. When Rao (the red giant star) started to give out, seismic activity shook Krypton to its core, and the planet went ba-da-BOOM shortly after Kal-El's ship took off.

The way I see it, after the big battle in Superman II, Supes thought it might be a good idea to see if anyone else survived (maybe self-imprisoned in the Phantom Zone?).
