There are all kinds of sidestepping that. Self-imposed exile in the Phantom Zone is one. In the Superman Animated Series, one of Krypton's moons were colonized, and thrown off orbit when the planet exploded. The colonists froze themselves in hopes of being found someday. Superman eventually found them, but only a teenage girl had survived (Kara, i.e. Supergirl).

Coincidence or not, both in the cartoon and in the upcoming movie, Superman adapts his father's rocketship to return to Krypton.

Well, for one thing, they're making Brandon Routh look as much like Christopher Reeve as posible.
