And have yet another origin story movie. Nah, I think this was the right choice - it's only loosely a sequel to the other movies, more like recognizing them as part of the overall Superman mythos.

The thing is, they've rebooted Supes' origin since the first film came out. They wouldn't have to do an origin story, though. Think of the original Batman (by Tim Burton). The first film in the series, but it just touches on the origin. Honestly, that's why I like it more than Batman Begins.

I'm not quite sure why they chose to make a sequel to a 20+ year old film series. I'm hoping it will be good, but it's just such an odd choice.

Anyway, I hope they introduce some other villains in the sequels. While Supes doesn't exactly have the best rogues gallery (Puzzler? Toyman?), aside from Luthor, they haven't been used at all. I'd like to see Brainiac, Metallo, and Bizarro make appearances.

Superman Returns isn't a "direct sequel" to Superman 2. Visually, yes, it's very close to Superman I & II, but the storyline borrows from the movies and from other sources. The origin of Superman is so deeply ingrained into the public consciousness that there's no need in repeating it (heck, Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely summed it up in 4 panels and 8 words, in All-Star Superman).

A friend of mine saw it already, here's what he said

Saw Superman returns yesterday, and it was better than I expected... but there are 2 very bad points... one is the storyline with the kid... almost ruins the movie (without spoiling too much), and Kevin Spacey is a horrible Lex Luthor, and I don't think Singer's idea of Lex holds up to what Lex is suppossed to be

on a good note, I was pleasenetly surprised at both Routh's superman and Kate Bosworth as Lois... a lot of homage paid to the Christopher Reeve Superman movies too.

Check out the Superman TV website.

There you can watch the full A&E televised version of the Look, Up In The Sky! - The Amazing Story of Superman documentary (though not the extended DVD version), all 17 of the 1940's Max Fleischer Superman animated shorts and some episodes of the various Superman TV shows throughout the years.

Considering how long it's been since I've last seen the previous Superman films, should I watch Superman I & II before watching this movie?

Not really necessary.

Here ya go: rocketed to Earth by his scientist parents, his home planet goes boom, raised by kindly Kansas farmers, dad dies, goes soul-searching, builds a fortress in the Artic, becomes Superman, goes to Metropolis and gets a job at the Daily Planet as a mild-mannered reporter, falls in love with Lois Lane, she loves Superman but not Clark, he gives up his powers to be with her, superciminals run amok, he regains his power to defeat them, uses superkiss to erase Lois' memory of his secret identity and their 'shagging up'.
