Support Munchkins/Powerplayers?

My experience is unfortunately the same.

And it gets rough say, when the rest of the group is running damage control to not have that social encounter turn into a battle because the munchkin has gone too long without a combat encounter and is being purposefully antagonistic. As a DM, you're stuck either ignoring the munchkin, which can cause them to either check out even further or become more disruptive, or risking your game getting sabotaged/sidetracked.

I've yet to see a powergamer take a real support role and be happy for long, but that's just my experience.

Now, your character is a hammer, and every problem becomes a nail. And after investing the time and effort in making the the hammer, the player typically *really* wants to use it. And, if that shtick isn't what's called for, I find the player typically either "checks out" and disengages from the game until their shtick is called for, or (usually worse) tries to make as many moments as possible into uses for the shtick.

Power gaming a support role is largely a non-issue because you do not steal spotlight from other players, which is the real problem with power gaming. Turning up to opposition a few knots to match the powerful support the group gets is really easy to do.

That answers my main question. I think the best way to tell the difference between a Munchkin and powergamer is to ask them to play support. A real powergamer won't mind but a munchkin will :P
