Supporting advertisers at EN World (WARNING: Rant)

Not really sure why you posted this in the manner you did. Clearly the book is a good product. In my case, I don't play D20 Sci-Fi, so I won't make this purchase. That said I have supported people at this site in my own way.

Example: Ghostwind posted a thread about his financial woes regarding the D20 Magazine Rack site. I had never even been to that site before I read his post, but I still sent a fewbucks because I want to support the industry and I've been reading his postings for a while.

I think if you went about this a different way you would yield better results. Good luck with the book.

I don't understand why some people have to be so negative. I'd just like more people to click on the ads at EN World that I or people I know buy here. Dawning Star is a great product. I think people should check it out when they get a chance.

Yo! Dude! It is not Dawning Star that people are objecting to - it is your rant! You have torpedoed the product instead of helping it! Do not blame people for not liking what you did.

The Auld Grump, way too many exclamation points, but...

This has to do with advertising, too. Reason: I am considering no longer advertising at EN World any more. Why? It hasn't been effective the instances that I have for OWP or IPR. Am I the only one who thinks this? No.

Would I like to continue advertising at EN World? Yes.

You mean you're... yelling? :D

Yep. That is indeed what I would call yelling.

I can understand that you are frustrated, but it really did not help. I really had considered looking to see what it was about by clicking the ad. The only reason that I had not was some dim concept that it might some how be connected with Dawn Forge or Morning Star. (Neither of which thrilled me when I looked at them.) It might simply be the title that is throwing people.

The Auld Grump

Well, you made me check it out and I'm more interested than the banner ad ever made me.

To be honest, the entire reason I've ignored it is the name. The ad didn't, from what I can see, tell me anything about what it was. It was a new setting. It had a name like Morningstar, which *is* something I've heard about on on this board. The name struck me as uncreative knock-offy, so I didn't click the ad.

That's not saying anything about the product. It's just a feature of advertising. Advertising doesn't often directly generate sales. You see how many car commercials in a day? And how many cars do you buy each day?

No, advertising is more so that the item is in your mind the next time you're in the market for a product. It's so when you want a car, you think of the cars you've heard of.

In that respect, the advertising that was designed for Dawningstar didn't do a very good job. It told me nothing about the setting, and only piqued my disdain for having a similar name to Morningstar. In effect, it reminded me of a competitor's product, while telling me nothing about itself.

The money you spend on advertising is lost. It won't be coming back. You won't recoup those losses. It is pure expense. If it is designed well, the advertising will generate buzz, which is what *actually* sells your product. If it is designed poorly, it'll just be another banner add for a product I don't need.

And yeah, the fact that you're marketing a Sci Fi product to a primarily Fantasy crowd doesn't help the situation, either. ;)

CMG runs banners on EN World, periodically, and supports the site through its efforts in contests, during fund raising drives, and with the awesome Cooperative Dungeon projects. These efforts are returned manifold through the purchases of CMG products by many, many EN World members. CMG will continue to put forth this support and thanks all of the customers who make such purchases when they see a CMG product that they feel will be useful to them. We hope that many more will give us a try when they see something they like. From everyone at Creative Mountain Games, "Thanks!" (not yelling, just exclaiming) :)

No support from EnWorld? Just the other day I saw people praising your products:

Thanks for that link. I did not notice it and it was nice to read a couple of very positive comments about my books. Posts like that make it worth publishing. :)

I'm not saying there hasn't been support. The messageboards are great. It's the advertising that hasn't worked out (which is unfortunate because it's advertising that leads to revenues for EN World). I have given money as an individual to EN World, but I also want to give as a rep for two companies.

What were you expecting words on a black background to do, exactly? ;)
