Surprised by the non-suckage

I bought the Eberron Campaign Setting at a period where Eberron was getting pretty harsh treatment online. A few very vocal people were making what turned out to be entirely inaccurate negative statements about robots and airplanes. I picked it up expecting it to be full of crappy and incoherent stuff. Boy was I wrong. :)

Earthdawn 1e. I had heard nothing about it, but the art was cool- lots pf color plates, neat paintings and what not. I got it home and read it through; we played it and much to my surprise it was a huge success. The funky dice really added to the drama. The magic system wasn't so great though. that said, I'd probably use the core engine if it weren't so entwined in the setting.

I bought the Blackmoor stuff at GenCon expecting it to be mediocre at best. Well it isn't fantastic, but it is considerably better than mediocre. So I am actually glad I bought it. So now I won't have to hold it against my PbP DM who is running a Blackmoor game. Guess I'll have to thank him for getting me to buy it.

Swashbuckling Adventures, and the line of supplements that followed it. I've had a fair amount of play with it, and until very recently, my entire group was loving it. The problems recently I think are more the result of a single bad player in any case.

Every time I hear people trash the book, I look at all the fun stuff we've done with it.

Well, the planar handbook is newer, and I think there might be a few other new ones, but I'm not a planar freak. What I love about the manual is there's a lot in there to make the planes fit your own campaign world. After I bought it, I realized that I can use demiplanes to flesh out my world, and it won't seem too "High-Magic" - as an example, Dr. Morgenes' workshop in the Tad Williams series could be considered a demi-plane.

So now, my "elven kingdom" is a floating island that appears and disappears in the mists, and is actually a demiplane of its own. Thanks Manual of the Planes!

This is a perfect way to play a city of elves....and seems kind of like how Jiriki and Aditu's home (Sesuadra?) was in the books. Different seasons from the land around it, and inaccessible if one didn't enter it in certain ways.

One of my favourite parts of those books is in To Green Angel Tower when Jiriki rides out in full armour from between the two stones on the border, in the middle of the forest, and summons the Sithi army to finally join the war. Very cool moment.

Thanks for the idea...!

...perhaps romantic/erotic/social intrigue might be a fun way to introduce SOs to the hobby?

Whaddya think?

I think you may be right, but I know for a fact that Book of Erotic Fantasy isn't the supplelement to help you with that.

It's the book if you are planning on running what the average person would call a "Deviant Sexuality" game.

What I'm saying is, if you and your Wife's game involves Sexual Politics, "Seduction as Diplomacy" and the specifics of siring Heirs, this isn't the book for you.

If you plan for your game to be about Gnome Dildo Crafters, the ability of Halflings to perform Oral sex on Ogres and using the "Command" spell to make people masturbate...then hey, carry on :)

In my opinion Dawnforge is simply the best published campaign setting I have played for 3.0 or 3.5. The campaign book is a template for future books of that type in my opinion. Great flavor, great mechanics. I actually wish it was the default setting for all D & D. I too was bummed when there weren't more than 3 books published. The online community really didn't take a hold of it with such limited support.

I agree entirely.

Dawnforge is my favorite Fantasy Setting.

Gee, great. Thanks for outing my gaming style here on EN World. Sheesh. ;)

Good point, though. Perhaps the RAW would suffice for romantic, intrigue centered play.

Yeah, you might also take a look at Dynasties and Demoagogues from Atlas Games. there's lots of actualy, functional rules mechanics in there for politics and intrigue. Less so romance as I recall, but I'm sure the foundation could be easily built on.
