Combine a decent dex score with ranks in tumbling. That has helped my spell casters get out of tight situations many times.
As a DM, one of my favorite things to do is to have the bad guys attack from unexpected directions. Many DMs I read about here will do the same, or at least make sure the Wiz is "harried" in some way. Having a few ranks in Tumble (so you can make that DC 15 check more than half the time) is always a good idea.

Another key point is party protection. Stay in the middle (2nd from last, if possible). To reinforce this: Make sure the party appreciates you enough to protect you from bad guys. Having a few AoE spells (Sleep at 1st level, fex) will demonstrate your usefulness.

Other utility spells will make your party appreciate you. Never go out without at least one light and detect magic spell memorized. You never know when you might need one.

Con can be useful for HP. Dex helps you dodge stuff and hit with ranged. Depending on your build, one may be a little more important to you than the other.

If you're going with a lot of ranged touch attacks, Point Blank and Precise shot are invaluable. Don't overlook scrolls, because while it may cost you XP, the extra spell could save your life one day.

Spells that augment others are good, like Enlarge Person. Also, Summon Monster gives you a flexable spell and your own little protector, though it's infinately more useful at 2nd level.

Mage Armor is great, Extended Mage Armor is worth a 2nd level spell in many cases.

Creative Illusion use can save your bacon.

And, if all else fails, Toad Familiar is 3 extra HP.
