I believe you... but I owned the 1E DMG and DMed 1E heavily and it doesn't ring a bell, so how memorable can it have been?

You are right. What it boils down to really, is it one of the artifacts that figured heavily in your campaign world or not? For my world and its various campaigns over the years, its a major plot point/influence.

Other folks/groups, maybe not so much ehh?

For sure! For whatever reason, though, I never had an artifact pop up in any of my campaigns. Any imagery I can now conjure up about the 1E artifacts comes from what I read in the DMG. A few of these items still resonate after all of these decades, but some make me WTF... Regalia of Might? Throne of the Gods? Never read about these, or if I did, they made no impact.
