Horizon Walker 15 I was initially skeptical, but I can say that in play this is seriously fun.

Lord of the Hidden Layer
pretty much what Charlemagne's real Paladins were. They were all about killing all the Saracens they could, as opposed to all of the AD&D version's virtue and chivalry and lawful goodness and stuff.
Charlemagne's Paladins were about 400 years ahead of the Chivalric Paladins. Hence the difference.
When I read the Charlemagne chapter in "Bulfinch's Mythology", I could not believe that Charlemagne didn't have some of his Paladins executed for disobeying orders.

Richard the Lion-Hearted -era paladins are a lot more fun to read about and to play, perhaps because they don't face a deadly threat from an external society.
(They're plenty dangerous to each other though.)
