I mean, the list is what it is, and feel free to vote however you like, but I’d say the difference is pretty cut and dried. Animation is a medium that creates the illusion of movement through a rapid succession of still images, where animatronics is a medium that creates the illusion of independent motion through mechanical manipulation of inanimate objects. Simply put, animatronics actually move, animation is defined by making nonmoving figures appear to move. I can’t see any definition of animation that would include filmed animatronics that wouldn’t also include all other forms of motion picture. We can quibble about animation vs. animatronics and what truly counts as "animated" or not but that's a surprisingly deep rabbit hole I'm not inclined to get into right now. However, whoever made this list seemed to think it qualifies, so that's good enough for me.
The definition of animation disagrees with you, as it also includes stop motion and puppetry. The word literally meant to animate. Which is done with objects as well as images. It’s literally explicitly called out as such in the definition.
So you’re right, it is pretty cut and dried. Just not how you think it is.
Animation is a dynamic medium in which images or objects are manipulated to appear as moving images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film. Today most animations are made with computer-generated imagery (CGI). Computer animation can be very detailed 3D animation, while 2D computer animation can be used for stylistic reasons, low bandwidth or faster real-time renderings. Other common animation methods apply a stop motion technique to two and three-dimensional objects like paper cutouts, puppets or clay figures. The stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject is known as pixilation.
I’ve got no beef with CGI, I just didn’t like Kubo all that much as a movie. In contrast, The Dark Crystal is one of my all-time favorite movies, I just don’t consider puppetry animation. You know, I think the argument might be more compelling if people focused fire on The Dark Crystal BEFORE going whole hog against CGI animation.
