(it's not that I don't like liches... um ... I just think that they are awesome awesome and unique big bads that have become banal through overuse. One lich is a terror throughout the realm; many liches are meh)

That's why I treat liches like dragons, another awesome big bad that is overused. Any given campaign of mine may not even have one, and they are baaaaaad news. When a dragon or lich shows up, about once every 1-3 years of real time, it scares the hell out of my players.
