SW saga edition overview at WotC

The Saga edition won't necessarily require miniatures for play, but rather give you more examples of how to use miniatures. Like D&D 3.5, it'll probably have diagrams and pictures illustrating things like Cover and Line of Sight, that sort of thing.

And as for miniatures... I recall in the early days of the Living Force campaign, people were using LEGO(r) figures to represent stormtroopers, characters, critters... You really can use anything you like, since part of the purpose of a miniature is as a placeholder to determine where your character is and what your character can see, shoot, and get shot by.

I know someone who got some Play-Doh(r) and baked up little disks with numbers impressed in them. She uses them to represent goons.

Looks ok in general but I don't think hit points work well as a rule mechanic in a *high tech* environment. Combat won't be as legal. Oh your 15th leve Jedi crashed in his starship from 80' in the air. Take 15d whatever and make a massive damage save...+15 bonus no problem!

I prefer the wound points of the older system.

Well, there's also the condition track to consider. Massive Damage Save isn't part of the equation, it looks like; rather, some events are very likely to push your character up the condition track even if he takes minimal damage.

Crashing an X-wing is most likely going to have an effect on the character. Also, from other hints on other boards, it seems that the "Massive Damage Save" is going to be adjustable; it's not going to be a constant "x damage = +y to Save DC."

I am looking forward to this. I hated the old force rules, just did not feel like Star Wars to me. I love skill consolidation. D&D does need to consider this, do you we truly need Spellcraft & Knowledge Arcana? Do you need Craft skills and Professions?

You can always take a lawyer to the battlefield :).

I'm really curious how all the changes will work out. I like the class changes. The jedi dichotomy looked always a bit artificial, the fringer was lacking a niche and the tech specialist was a weak one-trick-pony. I'll have a look at how the loss of the force adept was compensated and will keep my judgement on that till I see it. Less base classes with broader abilities is something I really like. I hope the number of skill points didn't go down so that the range of what a character can do actually went up with the consolidation of skills.

I don't like miniatures and hope that their use can be easily ignored without too many penalties. As far as the rest is concerned, I'll have to see it in order to make up my opinion.

Did you deliberately pick an example directly taken from the movies (that is, Anakin emergency-lands a CAPITAL SHIP from ORBIT in Episode III), making your post a sarcastic knock on people who would complain that hit points aren't 'realistic' enough for Star Wars?

Just as VP/WP is an offshoot of the HP system ... as well as d20 Modern Massive Damage system ... I'm certain the designer will make an offshoot HP system that is much, MUCH, more suitable for a space fantasy opera genre that is Star Wars.

VP/WP is much more suitable for the Serenity/Firefly 'verse. ;)
