Switching Psionic Disciplines

First Post
Hi all,

Are there specific mechanics to switch a psionic discipline? One of my players wants to switch their disicpline, and is leaving it up to me in regards to the penalty to impose if he does this.

Any suggestions as to what could be an appropriate price to pay?

Thanks everyone!

Perhaps this is too powerful and too easy of a solution ...

Let the player take the class Psion again, at their next level, choosing the new discipline and new powers as normal. Then you would have a multicalssed Psion: for example Psion(Eogist)3/ Psion (Seer)1. The point totals would combine but the rest would stay seperate as decribed on pages 19 & 20 of the EPHB.

I fear that this may be too powerful and over balancing but it is just a first look at the Idea. - -

Do you have any guide lines as to haw a cleric would change their faith? that may have a similar tilt to it if you did not want to have a multi classes psion.

Perhaps a feat to add a new disciplne --- having a coast of a feat and gaining a disciple and not changing the rest of the psion.

Can the psychic reformation power be used to re-choose class levels? I know it works with feats, skills, and the like. Even if it doesn't, as written, you could allow it in this particular case.

assuming of course that he doesn't want to keep his old discipline specific powers, I would just let him change. As he plays, he should start to focus on those powers he knows that are more in line with what he wants to change to and he should stop using his discipline powers. If he can do that for a full level, allow him to change. He would be required to exchange discipline powers but really nothing else.

It's a matter of motivation.

Normally, I'd say no. Definite no, if the player just wants to add different discipline powers.

If the player just found out, that he or she doesn't have made the right choice and the other one would be much cooler, then why not. Just rework the character to fit (especially removing all old discipline powers).

A psion changing discplines is the equivalent of a wizard changing speciality.

If you won't allow one then you shouldn't allow the other.

But really, this is definately a Rule 0 question and the answer could change depending on mood and weather.

He's a mid-level telepath (8th) and all of the players have sent me long term plans for their characters. He realizes, to seize power in his homeland (a legendary city lost on the astral plane, that he plans to return to the prime world to rule) a kineticist would be a better way to go.

If I said no, can't be done, he would accept it. But I am a flexible kind of DM and as long as it works with the story, I will find a way to make it work. Psychic reformation is a good way to go.

I do, but it involves time and religious devotion. I guess I could have him meet a coatl (the psionic mentors in my world) and then a week later, he is physically altered to know use his new discipline.

I'm looking for more of the flavour of the way I do it to mesh with something in the mechanics I haven't thought of yet.

Thanks again for your awesome ideas!
