SWORD COAST LEGENDS Impressions from E3

Sword Coast Legends was one of the many games on display at E3 this week. MMORPG.com was able to try it out. "TheHiveLeader got some hands-on time with the upcoming RPG, Sword Coast Legends. Also, Bill Murphy is a jerk of a DM. Also, we sadly were not able to get gameplay footage from the game, so the video is from the trailer for the game." This short (2 minute) video provides a quick overview. "Holy crap! Sword Coast Legends is good!" They briefly touch on the DM tools, too, which I know a lot of people are very eager to hear more about.

It's clearly a great tool for dungeon crawling with your friends! Everyone who's tested it, all the previews, all the news confirms this. :)

Whether or not it's a great tool for crafting stories hasn't been answered yet. I've been closely following the game, the official forums, and as much news as I can find. Despite it being about launch time, we still don't know if DM Mode will allow for dialogue branching. From what gamers who've played around with SCL report, the quest tools in DM Mode are actually pretty limited right now. Also, we don't know if the #1 requested feature for placeable terrain tiles (i.e. create your own map, not use a randomized one) will be in the game or at what point they will be in the game.

There are still a surprising number of unknowns.

To their credit, the N-Space folks have a good track record, and they've been wonderfully receptive with the fans, so there's no reason not to expect many of these issues/questions will be addressed.

However, what you get when you buy SCL out of the gate (as opposed to being able to update, say, 5-10 months later) is still unknown.

If it would be there, they would tell us. They try to sell their game. Not telling us about (as you say) the #1 requested feature means, that they don't have it and that there are no current plans to make it. They can't say this ('cause they try to sell the game), so they obfuscate and "seem" to be only inprecise in their communication so that we can't say "You lied!" later.

I don't know, I listened to Dan Tudge (?) speak and it sounded like they were pretty gung-ho about giving DMs the ability to make their own maps (rather than using randomized maps that are then customized). Not expecting it at launch though.

I'm keeping my eye on SCL for sure! I've got a bunch of scattered gaming friends who it would be a blast to play with. I am waiting until after launch to get answers to these questions and also to better gauge what N-Space's plans are going forward with the game (probably after they take well-needed vacations).
