Syfy cancels Eureka

Ok, I'm confused. My understanding is that they are currently airing the second half of the 4th season. Are you saying they film episodes so far in advance, that they are almost finished filming the 5th season, which won't even air for several months?
In those several months, there's probably post-production work (like CGI special effects) going on. December isn't all that far off, in terms of getting complicated work done.

Not only that, but keep in mind this is still technically the fourth season. These episodes we're watching were likely in production in the summer of 2010. Syfy decided to split up the third and fourth seasons over two summers, likely to extend the number of years aired whilst not having to go through the standard negotiations (see here). In that light, we're actually on Eureka's effective sixth season. The actors aren't going to be sitting around for a year waiting for the network to catch up.

The good news is that they got an extra episode to do a finale.

Kinda bummed that the show is getting canned, but looking forward to the wrap up. As others have said, at least we get a wrap up, rather than just cut off.

I still find Season One to be my favorite. I enjoyed the show more when each episode was it's own story, rather than a large underlying one that overshadows the little stuff.
