Tac-Tiles: Gone for good?

I seem to remember a post on the B-C products website shortly after I bought my set that said that one of the vendors that they had to use in the production process had gone under and they could not produce any more tiles until they found another supplier/vendor. I got one of the later sets that has the light gray lines instead of the darker brown grid.

I also wish I had bought two while I had the chance.

I'm good friends with the BC-Products guys, and I can tell you, it's a crying shame all the problems with manufacturers they've had.

And the issue with the patent was a joke. Long story short, the patent attorney was a fracking idiot. They spent tens of thousands trying to get passed him, and in the end, ran out of mental, emotional, and monetary juice. Needless to say, this just made the manufacturing issues worse.

They are still looking for a manufacturing solution, but thus far, no luck.

This is a real shame. It really did seem like a good product and with the advent of the popularity of D&D Miniatures and the encouragement of 4e to use miniatures, something like this would be a very popular tool.

Unfortunately, I don't see the manufacturing problem ever being solved. The fact is that oil prices will only increase, making plastics more and more expensive. If anyone was looking into the viability of such a product, I would think that finding an alternative to plastics would be the most workable solution.

There are plant-matter based plastics. I wonder if those could be made cheaper or more easily manufactured?

I found Tac-Tiles through Dragon Mag, I believe and with 10min in to the first session I used them I was already planing my order for a second set.

So luckily I have a full 24 tiles available for use, but now after over 5 years of use some them are needing to be replaced. I know I would pick up a 3rd set to have/use a replacements with out a second thought if/when they become available again, even though I have a projector set up for my primary gaming.

The FLGS I was going to when I moved to the area 4 years ago started carrying them after the manager saw them in use in my games he played in at the store. They were always a good seller for them.

Hope they can get things straightened out sooner or later.

I'd buy tiles made of linoleum or coated wood- I don't care what they're made of, they rock.

Now there's an idea. Take those rigid linoleum floor tiles, cut an interlocking edge design and stencil a grid on. Not as good as the real thing but might make a half-way decent replacement.
