Take the RPG Personality Survey Here!

First Post
Hi all! It's taken me several days but, with some help from friends offline, we've finally got the survey up and running. The goal of course is to find out what gamers are like, and who plays what. Although it doesn't ask everything I wanted, it still asks a lot of interesting questions.

SURVEY CLOSED TO ROLEPLAYERS - thanks so much for your responses!

It's going to be a long road getting the number of responses we'll need for statistical analysis (100 is a working minimum) but I've done this kind of thing before, and I think we'll get there.

Thanks to everyone in this other thread for their help and advice!

Wow - fifteen responses in 24 hours! Thanks.

A lot of you are asking about the conclusions and answers from others. I'm testing six hypotheses, and while I'll be glad to can tell you whether these are upheld or not, and mention other findings from the entire dataset, I won't release any individual responses or personal statements. Everything you submit in this survey will be taken confidentially.

Thanks again for all your help!

I have just over thirty, now, and I'm going to take this to the Order of the Stick Forum and probably RPG.net. Does anyone else know of another good roleplaying forum where people would be open to something like this? I don't want to post this survey on places where it will just be regarded as spam.

You could try RPoL, maybe.

Just to note, as I already said in the survey, some questions are vague or could refer to 2 different things so I often had to go with "no opinion."

Oh wow; you just took it, I see. If you're referring to the questions at the end, those were taken from previous surveys. It's too late to change the survey now, but it isn't a bad thing to indicate no opinion or "neither agree nor disagree" for items that feel vague.

In fact, it's common for surveys in the social sciences to contain meaningless or contradictory items that work from respondents' gut reactions alone. For instance, there was one dogmatism question that went, "Even though I have a lot of faith in the intelligence and wisdom of the common man, I must say that the masses behave stupidly at times." The statement was meant to be contradictory, and researchers found that some kinds of people agreed, while others disagreed with it. Ultimately, it's the way people answer, rather than the apparent meaning of a question, that contains information regarding what people are like.

Anyway, I'll take a look at RPoL.

I see, no wonder most people on the autism spectrum have issues with such surveys  I don't do gut reactions, not sure I even have them as much as "normal" people.

I was referring, for example, to the horoscope question. What type of horoscopes do you refer to? The one in magazines or real ones personalized for you? That is a big difference. There were other questions that also depended on specifics, like "alternative medicine" can refer to a lot of things.

I tend to go into specifics all the time haha.

As someone who studies so-called "alternative medicine" for a living, I was a little peeved to see it painted with such a broad brush. It can refer to everything from traditional healthcare systems with thousands of years of use to something someone came up with yesterday, science-based therapies to faith-based practices, treatments that are considered standard of care to fraudulent schemes.

Then again, I also have a psychology background so I do, to be fair, understand some of what goes into making these surveys.

Makes me think surveys aren't for people who tend to think a lot. Not sure how any information about how people are like could be gleaned from such questions, despite having some psychology background myself.

But then I was the one driving every child psychologist nuts with plucking apart the questions they gave me. ;)

I'm not a huge believer in psychological assessment myself. Maybe you can learn something from it, but I've seen its value grossly overrated.

But here we are, taking this survey.
