Taking damage from the Whirlwind ability/spell

Hi! I'm a bit puzzled by the wording in the description for the Whirlwind ability (air elementals, djinn). From the 3.5 SRD:

Creatures one or more size categories smaller than the elemental might take damage when caught in the whirlwind (see table for details) and may be lifted into the air. An affected creature must succeed on a Reflex save when it comes into contact with the whirlwind or take the indicated damage. It must also succeed on a second Reflex save or be picked up bodily and held suspended in the powerful winds, automatically taking the indicated damage each round.

Does the creature start taking damage in the round it gets picked up (i.e. the moment it fails its second Reflex save), or from the next round onwards?

Ditto for the Whirlwind spell:

Any Large or smaller creature that comes in contact with the spell effect must succeed on a Reflex save or take 3d6 points of damage. A Medium or smaller creature that fails its first save must succeed on a second one or be picked up bodily by the cyclone and held suspended in its powerful winds, taking 1d8 points of damage each round on your turn with no save allowed.

Any thoughts?

The text you provided answers the question.

They take damage as soon as they come into contact with the effect, unless they make a Reflex Save.

So damage starts first round.
