Talislanta

In 1st and 2nd edition, I also took things from Talislanta and added them to my standard campaign. The creator did a lot of great things with products that added core classes from Bard's Productions, to alternative settings like Atlantis, which is basically the time of Conan to Talislanta.

Now in 3.5, I want a 3.5 version of Talislanta but that's not going to happen as the time for such a setting being commercially viable I fear, has passed. Of course that doesn't count the rabid fans who love the current system and would hate for a different interpetation. Ah, it's a shame that Wizards of the Coast dropped the ball on the GURPS Talislanta. That would've been sweet to have.

Talislanta d20?

I used to be known in the Talislanta community as "Monk" and did work on the probably-never-to-be-released City Book. Talislanta kept the lights on at Wizards while they developed Magic, and many of the artists that started on Tal became the first stars of Magic, like Ron Spencer, Mark Tedin and Anson Maddocks.

Talislanta has to be my all time favorite setting. I would love to see a d20 version. Steve Sechi, the game's creator, has a very firm vision and doesn't like complicated game systems. Same, since converting Tal to d20 would be a piece of cake. I really think they should consider it, making it a PDF product (no capital necessary) and see what happens.

I yearn to visit the shores of Talislanta again!

I once e-mailed Steve about that and he said if some one from Wizards would contact him about it he would consider it. That was over a year and a half ago or more.... Ah well. maybe a writing campaign to Wizards should be started.
Goddess knows I would snap that up in a heart beat.
I think the Magic system from Arcana Unearth would be the closest fit to Tal's.
I once had a Tal game (back in it's 3rd edition) going with the Meepites (My gaming group) and we loved it. I would have a ball with Tal d20.

I'm also a great fan of Talislanta, though, to be truthful, I've only played it using its own rules two or three times, with people who I thought didn't want to devote the effort necessary to learn the scope of D&D rules. In writing the revised version of E.N.Publishing's The Elements of Magic, I've drawn on my experiences with the Tal magic system, trying to add in a few extra layers of complexities that seem more suited to D20, but keeping the same general flexibility. I even figured out a way to combine different magic types, which Tal never had (in Tal, you can't have one spell both create an Illusion and hurt something, for instance).

I even talked to the Shooting Iron folks last year about whether they'd want to do a d20 version of Talislanta. We never really got far into it, because neither side had writers to spare.

Truthfully, though, a Talislanta adaptation to d20 wouldn't be hard, and I've got a handful of notes about the setting on my hard drive. The bulk of an adaptation would be setting material, fluff; the rules could be done in a cinch. I'm still tempted to start writing on it.

It'll sound crazy but I once tried to hook him and Necromancer Games up. I mean imagine it. The old Complete Adventurer, Complete Spellcaster and Complete Alchemist updated to 3.0! (At the time). Sadly, he eithern ever got the e-mail due to a change in e-mail, or didn't want to deal with Necromancer Games.

I mean, how HARD could a conversion be? It's very similar systems.

The toughest part would be converting all the frickin' different races. :p

Maybe a forum here at ENWorld for d20 Tal conversions? :)

The races/archtypes are the key.

Basicly I see this as having a few races and the "classes" being few andf far between. the Prestige Classes however are numerous. Most classes would have Racial requirements. Ie.. only Xambrians may be Witch hunters.

Conversly you could have all races done with an ECL. your basic Cimrilian is not the equal to a Tazanian or a Maruk (The Kobolds of the Talislanta world at -1 ECL)

Many races also have unique skills like the technomancers.

Just how would you do it?

To go for the Feel of a Talislanta-D&D hybrid I think the race then Racial Class system would be best. IMHO
