Talisman, the board game

First Post
I'm not sure where this post should go on the board, so I'll stick it here.

Does Games Workshop no longer make the Talisman board game? I have the 1985 edition, but everytime we play, we have problems with the holes in the rules. I'd like to get a more recent, and presumedly fixed edition of the game. But I can't find (on the Web) any real discussion about any newer version and how clean the rules are.

Games Workshop has nothing on their site about Talisman.

Any pointers?

They released a new edition not that long ago (and one before that.)

FWIW, I have never enjoyed any of the new "warhmmerized" versions as much as I did the original.

Games Workshop stopped making boardgames years ago (10 or so?).

Good luck finding rules amendments (there are doubtless many websites devoted to the game), although I reckon you are probably best off fixing them yourselves.

The most recent edition of Talisman was produced as a limited edition (with a $75.00 price tag), and pretty much only produced to order. Which is to say, it's not readily available through normal distribution chains now. If you want to find a copy of it (or any other version), your best bet is to check on eBay. Or you might luck onto a store that has a copy.

As an aside... I'm a gamer that's SO outta the closet about my hobby that friends and I used to play Talisman in Perkins (a chain of 24-hour restaurants, for those of you who don't know).

Try Gamers paradise

At one point I was unable to find a copy of the new release, and was told by many gamestores of the limited availability thing. I almost gave up hope, until one day I was with my wife at the local mall, and as I am no into shopping for clothes I had wondered off into a Gamers Paradise in search of something to fight the boredom. Way in the back in the wargames section they had three copies of the new edition sitting there collecting dust.
I paid $80 some dollars with tax, and greedily rushe it home for inspection.
Heres what I found:
They did away with all the characters except for 12 of them, and also did away with alot of the cards that made the game fun. There are no expansions being released, and unless you want to make your own the game is pretty stagnate as is. Although I must say that I did enjoy the minitures that came with the game, but im a mini freak at heart.

On a scale of 1 to 10 Id give it a 4.

Wow - I hadn't realized they stopped doing board games.

I've always loved Talisman. It was always good for an evening of fun.

I ended up getting my own copy (after using others' for years) in the early or mid 1990s (or maybe it was later than that). I also got the City expansion and I think the Dungeon expansion as well. I think I decided the mindscape (or whatever it was called) was too strange and so didn't get it.

Cosmic Encounters was another fun boardgame, as was Kings and Things and Titan. And there are many others. *sigh* I wish having the time (and the nearby friends) to even play boardgames...

There are only two rules you need to know:

1) If you get the Prophetess, say, "I win."

2) If somebody else has the Prophetess, she must die.

The original Talisman board game was very fun but only had the main board and I think one or two expansions.

Then in the early 90's they released a big revised version of the game. The box was big and red and there were three expansions for it. Dungeon of Doom, Dragon's Tower, and the City Adventure.

Then the game went out of print completely.

Last year, they released a trimmed down version of the early '90s Talisman. They charged about 70-80 bucks for it. It was a limited release and hard to find.

I have the 90's revised Talisman and all the expansions for it. I also bought the rerelease to use as spare parts in case I lose pieces from my main set.

The bottom line is that its IMO, the coolest boardgame of all time. Its also a great way to introduce new people to gaming. Talisman is highly addicting, and once they know how to play it its a short hop to full on D&D.

I have not seen anything like it come out by any other company. Hell, if another company came out with something like Talisman, I'd buy it in a heart beat. Its a shame that GW doesn't make the game with all the expansions anymore. If they came out with some special collectors edition that had the entire 90's version of the game with all expansions and all the bonus characters that showed up in White Dwarf magazine, they could charge 500 dollars for it and I would buy a copy. Its that fun.

Aaah, Talisman :D

I like both the old version (more "flavor") and the newer edition (more miniatures ;) - hey, do you all know the dragon that came with the Dragon's Tower expansion?). I didn't know about this newest release, though - but it seems overly expensive...

Anyway...

Check out "Rueckkehr der Helden" (Return of the Heroes... yes, I know, it's a lame name) - it's similar to Talisman in a way (three combat stats instead of two), but with a modular board. Granted, it's in German, but if you're interested I might find a translation.
