Talking Monsters

With an int 5, I guess and Otyugh could desire to communicate with people. I've had them laugh or say "Mmm, food!" before, but that was about it. Weren't they semi-telepathic in 2ed, instead of having the ability to speak?

Otyughs are one of those creatures that I see in adventures that fall in the category of : Monsters that you fight and can not use smite evil on. I do not think I've ever seen an instance where an otyugh was nothing more than a dangerous critter in the sewer, but with int 5 and Neutral, they could be more..

I've heard of a campaign where there as an Otyugh in the sewers that acted like the Trash heap from Fraggle Rock and characters would go visit it to get information and advice.

I forgot all about the trash heap...that's a fantastic idea, BTW. I love the idea of talking monsters, but my players accuse me of making the monsters too sympathetic already.

Some other interesting talking monsters:

Behir
Chimera
Delver
Ettercap (I had a character who befriended awhole tribe of these guys)
Roper
Tojanida

hmmm...giving me all sorts of ideas. :]

I had an idea of using a flesh eating otyugh steal children through windows at night after seeing this mini.

If a group tries to get info from one of these things, i would definitly test thier scat humor limits.

One of my players found out a local asylum [Dungeon magazine adventure The Styes]was employing an ettercap as a guard. Restraints, sedatives & pest control, all in one package.

It was by no means standard but my party had to go 'rescue' a talking baby bullette from a wizard's dungeon labs once. His name was Reggie and he wanted to be a wizard when he grew up. He also thought that elves were too sinewy but halflings were just about right.

What you might not realize about Otyughs is that they also enjoy wine and cheese socials and Classical music.

I don't know. I woulda thought they'd like country or rap, you know, something more crappy.

Sorry.
