Targeting Held item with a power

I did not say weapon. I said stuff.

That, on the other hand, is not a object-targeted spell and thus follows the rules for ranged weapons because it's a weapon-like spell. You cannot target a creature's items with a ranged weapon.

Why can I not use the spell on the opponents weapon? I am not using the sunder attack option.

I didn't say weapon either, I said items. I think items == stuff. I was equating weapon with acid arrow because acid arrow is a weapon-like spell (a la complete arcane) and such an equivalency is generally accepted (please correct me if you disagree).

The reason you can't use a ranged weapon is because the rules for Smashing an Object stipulates sundering (as Blackfiend points out). Any other rule would require an exception (like the energy missile power allowing you to target objects without an attack roll). If you don't use these rules then you have no definition for AC, hit points, or hardness, no rules on damaging items at all, in fact.

On the other hand, the called shot variant in the DMG might provide for this (or you could use the ranged sundering feat).
