Targeting items with spells.

Hi all,

If I target an item with a spell, that item gets a save based on whomever is holding it. That part is easy.

SILENCE: I attempt to silence your hat, you save, we're done.

What about for spells with more physical/tangible effects? What springs to mind is Grease.

GREASE: I attempt to grease your sword, you save, are we done? Has the grease completely dissipated because of one save? Do you have to make another save when you swing the sword because the grease adhered, you just didn't drop it the first time?

Opinions please, faithful ENWorlders!

Depends on the spell. In case of Grease there is no effect, if the initial save is made successfully.

What prompted the question was that if you choose to cast it on the floor, the opponent(s) gets a save, however if they pass, the Grease is still there. Is there wording to prevent this when used on an item instead?

Yes.

A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. This save is repeated on your turn each round that the creature remains within the area. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Balance check. Failure means it can’t move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Balance skill for details).

So you cast it on a surface and it remains there for the duration of the spell.

The spell can also be used to create a greasy coating on an item.

When you cast it on an object, which works a little different, there are two options:

1)
Material objects not in use are always affected by this spell, ...
2)
while an object wielded or employed by a creature receives a Reflex saving throw to avoid the effect.

If the save is made, the effect is avoided (or negated).

Then it goes on...

If the initial saving throw fails, the creature immediately drops the item. A saving throw must be made in each round that the creature attempts to pick up or use the greased item.

The item is only 'greased', if the initial saving throw is failed, since that ('greasing' the item) is the effect of the spell, which gets avoided by the successful save.
